What makes an app name work in the store

The four styles and when to use them

StyleExample shapeBest for
DescriptiveSays what it doesUtilities and B2B, where clarity beats charm
Invented wordA new single wordConsumer brands you plan to trademark and grow
Two-word compoundTwo real words joinedMost apps; memorable and usually available
Short and playfulA familiar word used sidewaysConsumer and social apps

After you pick one

  1. Search the exact name on both stores. If an app with that name exists in your category, move on.
  2. Check the trademark register for your main market. In the US that is the USPTO search.
  3. Check the .com and .app domain. A missing .com is not fatal for an app, a taken trademark is.
  4. Say it out loud to five people and ask them to spell it.
  5. Write the subtitle with the main keyword, then check the whole title plus subtitle fits the character limits with the listing checker.

Questions people ask

Are the names checked for availability?

No. The generator avoids names it knows are established brands, but it cannot query the stores, trademark registers or domain registrars live. Check before you commit.

Why only twelve names?

Twelve across four styles is enough to see the direction you like. Run it again with a different tone or with the keywords changed and you get a fresh twelve.

Why does the subtitle matter?

On Apple the subtitle is indexed for search and shown under the name in results. It is the best place for the main keyword, which keeps the name itself short and ownable.

Can I use it for a company or product name?

Yes. Describe the product and audience the same way. The 12-character cap still helps: short names are easier to say, type and remember anywhere.

Is there a limit on runs?

A dozen runs an hour per network. It is free, and the limit only stops scripts.
