2026 cost guide

How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in 2026?

Anywhere from $19K to $375K. The range is that wide because two numbers decide it: how many hours the app needs, and what the team charges per hour. Here is each one, feature by feature and region by region, plus the costs that arrive after launch.

The short answer

How much does it cost to build an app?

An app costs its development hours multiplied by the team's hourly rate. A simple MVP with one core job takes about 638 hours, a standard app with accounts, payments, chat and push about 1,388 hours, and a complex product 3,122 hours or more. At a blended rate of $30 an hour (a typical India-based team) that is roughly $19K, $42K and $94K. The same hours at a US rate of $120 an hour cost four times as much: about $77K, $167K and $375K. On top of the build, budget 15 to 20% of the build cost every year for maintenance, $99 a year for an Apple Developer account, $25 once for Google Play, and money to launch it, because an app nobody downloads has cost you the whole build for nothing.

The formula

Cost = hours × hourly rate

Every app quote you will ever get is this formula, whether or not the agency shows it to you.

List the features. Estimate the hours each one takes. Multiply by what the team charges per hour. In Arsh Singh's breakdown that has been watched nearly 500,000 times, an app with five features estimated at 50, 40, 70, 100 and 80 hours comes to 340 hours. At $50 an hour that is $17,000. At $120 an hour the same app is $40,800.

The app did not change. Only the rate did. That is the first reason two quotes for the same idea can be miles apart. The second reason is the hours: one team quotes exactly the screens you described, another quotes what those screens need underneath to work with real users, such as payment failures, analytics events and an admin panel to run the thing.

What three typical apps cost to build

Built once for iOS and Android with React Native or Flutter, custom design. Hours come from the model behind our calculator; cost is hours × the blended hourly rate shown.

Midpoint estimates. Real quotes typically land 20% below to 25% above, depending on how much is already decided when you ask.

Where the team is

The same app, priced by region

The standard app above (1,388 hours) at each region's typical blended rate. The rate is the single biggest lever on your quote.

Team locationBlended rateStandard app range
United States or Canada$120$133K to $208K
UK or Western Europe$95$105K to $165K
Eastern Europe$50$56K to $87K
Latin America$45$50K to $78K
India$30$33K to $52K

Blended rate means the average across developers, design, QA and project management, not the senior developer's day rate.

Feature by feature

What each feature adds to the bill

Hours each feature adds to a single-platform build. Cross-platform multiplies them by 1.25, which is what the cost columns already include.

FeatureHoursCost at $30/hCost at $120/h
Accounts and login40$1,500$6,000
Social login24$900$3,600
Payments or in-app purchases60$2,250$9,000
Subscriptions60$2,250$9,000
Chat or messaging90$3,375$13,500
Maps and location50$1,875$7,500
Push notifications20$750$3,000
Photo and video upload70$2,625$10,500
AI feature (LLM or vision)120$4,500$18,000

Web app or dashboard260$7,800$31,200
Admin panel140$4,200$16,800
Custom backend and API200$6,000$24,000

Chat and AI features are the expensive ones because they need a server doing real work, not just screens. Web, admin and backend items are added once, not multiplied by platform.

The other multipliers

Platforms and design change the total too

  • One platform (iOS or Android only): 1.0 times the hours. Cheapest, but you are invisible to half your market.
  • Both, with React Native or Flutter: 1.25 times. One codebase, two stores. The right default for most first versions.
  • Both, as two native apps: 1.8 times. Worth it for graphics-heavy, hardware-heavy or platform-specific products.
  • Template design: about 10% fewer hours. Premium, animated, brand-led design: about 20% more.
After launch

The costs nobody puts on the quote

CostWhat to budget
Maintenance and updates15% to 20% of the build cost, every year
Apple Developer Program$99 a year
Google Play developer account$25, once
App store commission15% to 30% of in-app revenue (fee calculator)
Servers, email, SMS, maps, AI APIsScales with usage; ask for a monthly estimate at 1,000 and 10,000 users
Launch and marketingUsually the biggest line. See what it costs to market an app

On the standard app, maintenance alone is about $7.5K a year with an India-based team, or $30K at US rates. Put it in the plan before you sign, not after the first iOS update breaks login.

The real cost

Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest app

An illustration from the projects we get asked to rescue:

The cheapest quoteBuilt properly
Initial build$12,000$28,000
Rebuild when it could not scale$25,000$0
Months lost90
Real cost in year one$37,000$28,000

Payments would not scale, the data model had to be redone, and the second team charged more to untangle it than the first charged to build it. Figures are illustrative.

Spend less, safely

Five ways to cut the cost without cutting corners

  1. Build one job first. Version one does the single thing users came for. Every other feature waits for evidence.
  2. Go cross-platform. React Native or Flutter instead of two native apps saves roughly a third of the hours.
  3. Use a ready backend. Firebase or Supabase instead of a custom backend and API saves about 200 hours.
  4. Start from a design system. Template-based UI cuts about 10%. Brand polish can come with version two.
  5. Phase the feature list. Chat and AI are the most expensive features on the list. If they are not the core job, ship them in phase two.

Do not cut payments handling, analytics events or the data model. Those are the three places cheap builds break, and fixing them later costs more than building them once.

How ApsteQ prices a build

Scoped first, then quoted

We do not publish a rate card for app builds, because the scope decides the hours and the hours decide the price. Every build starts with a scoping call where we cut the idea down to what version one needs, then quote that.

The difference is what happens after the build. ApsteQ's engineering and growth teams are one team, so the app ships with the analytics, attribution and store assets it needs to be marketed, and the same people launch and grow it. More on how we work on the app development page.

Questions founders ask about cost

How much does it cost to build an app in 2026?

How much does a simple app cost to build?

A simple MVP that does one job for one type of user, with login and push notifications, built once for iOS and Android with React Native or Flutter, takes about 638 hours. That is roughly $19K with an India-based team, $32K in Eastern Europe and $77K with a US team, and about 8 weeks.

Why do app development quotes vary so much?

Two numbers drive every quote: the hours the team thinks the app needs, and its hourly rate. Rates alone differ by four times between an India-based team ($30 an hour blended) and a US team ($120). Hours differ because one team quotes the feature list you sent and another quotes what the app actually needs to work at scale, such as failed-payment handling, analytics events and an admin panel. Compare quotes line by line on hours, not on the total.

Is it cheaper to build for iOS and Android with React Native or Flutter?

Usually yes. One cross-platform codebase costs about 1.25 times a single-platform app, while two separate native apps cost about 1.8 times. For most first versions cross-platform is the better use of money; go native when the app depends on heavy graphics, deep hardware access or platform-specific features.

How much does it cost to maintain an app?

Plan on 15 to 20% of the original build cost every year. That covers operating-system updates from Apple and Google, security patches, library upgrades, bug fixes and server costs. It is not optional: an app that is not updated for new iOS and Android releases starts breaking within a year.

How long does it take to build an app?

Roughly 8 weeks for a simple MVP, 12 weeks for a standard app and 20 weeks or more for a complex product, assuming a team of 2 to 5 people. The fastest way to shorten it is to cut version one down to the one job users came for and ship the rest after real users are in the app.

How much does ApsteQ charge to build an app?

ApsteQ quotes each build after a scoping call rather than from a rate card, because the scope decides the hours. For a fast estimate before that call, use the free app development cost calculator, which uses the same hours and rates as this page. Our engineering and growth teams work together, so the quote also covers how the app will be launched.
