How Much Does It Cost to Market an App in 2026?
Four things: ad spend, the people who run it, creative and tools. Here is what each one costs in 2026, how to size a monthly budget from the paying users you need, and where the money leaks. Every benchmark is sourced.
How much does it cost to market an app?
Marketing an app costs four things: ad spend, the people who run it, creative, and tools. Ad spend is the number of installs you want multiplied by your cost per install, and that cost depends more on your category than on the channel: Apple Ads cost per tap runs from $0.30 to $0.80 for hyper-casual games to $14.41 for sports apps, with a global median of $0.92. An app marketing agency in the US typically charges $5,000 to $12,000 a month for a mid-market retainer, or about $3,000 a month plus 10 to 20% of ad spend on a performance model. Below roughly $5,000 a month in total, put the whole budget into one channel and judge it on cost per paying user, not cost per install.
Where an app marketing budget goes
| Line item | What it covers | Typical 2026 cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend | Apple Ads, Google App Campaigns, Meta, TikTok | Installs × cost per install (sized below) |
| People | Agency retainer or in-house team | $5,000 to $12,000 a month mid-market agency retainer |
| Creative | Video and static ads, store screenshots | $800 to $2,500 per video asset from specialist studios |
| Store and tools | Store commission, attribution (MMP), analytics | 15% to 30% of in-app revenue to the store, plus tools priced by volume |

Work out your monthly ad budget from the users you need
Start with paying users, not installs. Installs are only worth buying if enough of them pay.
monthly ad spend = installs needed × cost per install
Worked example (replace with your own numbers): you want 100 new paying users a month, and 4% of your installs become paying users. That is 2,500 installs. At a $2.50 cost per install, the ad budget is $6,250 a month. If you double the install-to-paid rate with a better onboarding or paywall, the same 100 users cost $3,125. Conversion is usually a cheaper lever than media.
Then check it pays back. Our free subscription app LTV calculator shows the payback period and LTV to CAC ratio for your numbers.
Apple Ads cost per tap by category
Category moves cost more than any other variable. Cost per tap is what Apple charges per click on your ad, before the install.
| Category | Apple Ads cost per tap |
|---|---|
| Sports | $14.41 |
| Finance and fintech | $3.00 to $6.06 |
| Health and fitness | $1.50 to $3.50 |
| E-commerce | $1.20 to $3.00 |
| Productivity and utilities | $0.80 to $2.50 |
| Hyper-casual games | $0.30 to $0.80 |
| Global median | $0.92 |
| Top-15-category average | $2.25 |

| ASO only | $1,500 to $5,000 a month, or $2,500 to $8,000 one-time audit | Pre-launch apps and organic-first growth |
| Enterprise, full service | $15,000 to $25,000+ | Multi-platform apps across iOS, Android, CTV and influencers |
Percentage fees fall to about 10% above $100,000 a month in spend and rise toward 20% below $10,000. Full breakdown, including what each tier should include: app marketing agency pricing per month.
What to spend at each stage
| Stage | Where the money should go |
|---|---|
| Pre-launch | Store listing and an ASO audit project ($2,500 to $5,000 one-time) plus a small paid test to learn your real cost per install |
| Under ~$5,000 a month | One channel only. Spread thinner and no channel gets enough data to learn |
| $8,000 to $10,000 a month | The usual minimum, fees plus media, for paid tests that reach a reliable answer across two channels |
| Above ~$100,000 a month | An in-house team usually beats agency fees; a specialist per channel is now affordable |
Three ways app marketing money gets wasted
- Optimising to cost per install. Any agency paid on CPI can buy you cheap users who never open the app twice. Judge every channel on cost per paying user and day-30 retention by source.
- Paying for traffic to a weak store page. If the listing converts poorly, every channel costs more. Fix the store listing first; it lowers the cost of every install after it.
- Comparing quotes on the headline number. A $3,500 quote that excludes creative, attribution setup and Apple Ads is not cheaper than a $7,000 quote that includes them.

Questions founders ask about cost
How much does it cost to market an app?
Marketing an app costs four things: ad spend, the people who run it, creative, and tools. Ad spend is the number of installs you want multiplied by your cost per install, and that cost depends more on your category than on the channel: Apple Ads cost per tap runs from $0.30 to $0.80 for hyper-casual games to $14.41 for sports apps, with a global median of $0.92. Below roughly $5,000 a month in total, put the whole budget into one channel and judge it on cost per paying user, not cost per install.
How much should I spend on app marketing per month?
Work backwards from paying users, not installs. Decide how many new paying users you need a month, divide by your install-to-paid rate to get installs, and multiply by your cost per install. Below roughly $5,000 a month, keep it on one channel. Most agencies need a combined budget of $8,000 to $10,000 a month, fees plus media, to run paid tests that reach a reliable answer.
How much does an app marketing agency cost?
A mid-market US retainer typically runs $5,000 to $12,000 a month, excluding ad spend. Performance models start around $3,000 a month plus 10 to 20% of ad spend, and full-service enterprise work runs $15,000 to $25,000 a month. ASO on its own is usually $1,500 to $5,000 a month, or a one-time audit of $2,500 to $8,000. The full breakdown is in our app marketing agency pricing guide.
What is a good cost per install?
There is no universal number, because it depends on what a user is worth to you. Apple Ads cost per tap ranges from under $1 in utilities and casual games to $3 to $6 in finance and over $14 in sports. A cost per install is good when the users it buys pay back their cost inside your target window, so measure cost per paying user and day-30 retention by channel.
Which is cheaper, Google App Campaigns, Meta or TikTok?
In 2026 benchmarks, Google App Campaigns run 15 to 30% below Meta on cost, and TikTok runs 10 to 30% below Meta with matched creative. Meta costs more but targets more precisely. Apple Search Ads on your own brand name is the cheapest of all, at $0.80 to $3.00 per install.
Is it cheaper to hire an agency or build an in-house team?
Below about $100,000 a month in ad spend, an agency is usually cheaper than hiring a specialist per channel, plus creative and analytics people. Above that, the maths flips and building in-house usually beats agency fees.
